Tonight marked the first time Hattie and David would return to the stage since their Thursday night confrontation. Her meetings with Agent Knight, Cesar Tavares, and her father had kept her from seeing him until an hour before they had to leave for the show. Dinner with Eva was oddly quiet, but Hattie was relieved she had finally clued in her mother to her doubts about him. Having a second ally in the house who knew everything was reassuring.

David’s mood was surly in the car to work, and his brief interaction with Hattie was brusque. He was still annoyed with her about the logbook and her lingering lack of trust.

“I need to know we’re okay,” Hattie said.

“Let’s concentrate on tonight’s show. We can talk later. Do you want any changes to the set?”

“No, the current lineup is fine for tonight. And, yes, we will discuss this. I don’t like this tension between us.”

“Maybe I should return to the States. I’m sure I can find work on the West Coast since you’re the focus of the media frenzy, not me.”

“Okay, wow.” Hattie shifted uncomfortably in the front seat. His anger ran deeper than she had thought.

Part of her wanted to trust the friend who had had her back and saw the good in her when she could not. They had met when Hattie was still reeling after Helen Reed broke her heart. If not for a fortuitously placed fire escape, she would have fallen to her death in a drunken stupor. That had been her wake-up call, and meeting David in the recording studio the next day was a sign of needed change.

She could tell that first day, when he had eyed the male drummer, that he was like her, and they would make the ideal lavender couple. He had helped her through to sobriety, buoying her whenever she felt weak. If he had not been her friend, she doubted her career would have recovered. In fact, without his friendship, she might be in a casket six feet deep. All of that history, however, might not be enough to salvage their relationship now.

When they neared the Palace, she remembered Inspector Silva saying they had yet to track down and interview two valets from last night’s party. What she had in mind was a long shot, but she had to try.

“Can you drop me off at the front of the hotel and park in my reserved spot? I need to talk to someone.”

“Sure, why not? Another thing you’re keeping from me.”

Hattie sighed. “I want to speak to Javier. He was working at the event at the president’s home last night, and I want to know if he saw anything. He’s not the type to talk to the police, but he trusts me.”

David glanced at her, briefly locking stares. His eyes said he appreciated the honesty. “Okay.”

He turned into the driveway but kept in the through lane instead of lining up in the valet queue. Stopping even with the main door, he said. “I’ll check on you a few minutes before we go on.
